Climax #399 Nome Arctic Ry.
This is another Alaskan Class A, #399, built for the Nome Arctic
Ry. in 1903. The Climax locos operating near Nome did not have
stiff grades to conquer, and were built with gear ratios that allowed
them to scoot fairly quickly over the tundra. Considering their
flexibility, lightweight, and speed, it is difficult to imagine a
better locomotive design to operate over a tundra railroad subject to
frost upheaval every spring, and soft ground all summer.
